Malhar, Chhattisgarh

This settlement, over a thousand years old, was known as Mallalapattan in ancient times, indicating it was a center of trade and commerce.

Artifacts from a continuous timeline, ranging from the 7th-8th century BCE to the Mughal period, have been found in large quantities here, including architectural remains, statues, inscriptions, copper plates, coins, seals, pottery, beads, and clay figurines.

Alongside evidence of trade, the site also displays signs of religious and architectural activity. The Deur Temple, dating back to the 7th-8th century, and two temples from the 11th-12th century CE - the Kedareshwar or Pataleshwar Temple and the Didineshwari Temple - are key structures here. The Didineshwari Temple houses a highly artistic and famous black stone idol of 'Didin Dai.' The Pataleshwar Temple complex includes a collection of Vishnu, Skandamata, Jain, and Buddhist idols.

The visit clubs seamlessly with Shivrinarayan for a day trip starting from Raipur.

Riddle of Indian Iconography

Tala, Chhattisgarh

Termed as the ‘riddle of Indian iconography’, the massive Rudra Shiva icon housed here is truly a sight to behold. Located in the village of Ameri Kampa, near the confluence of the Shivnath and Maniyari rivers, Tala is home to two ancient temple ruins from the 5th-6th century AD, known as the Devrani-Jethani temples.

The temples display intricate and lively carvings of Uma-Maheshwar, Shiva-Parvati engaged in a game, and Bhagirathi with the river Ganga. The lattice like design of intertwining vines and floral patterns, alongside the face of Kirtimukha (a protective deity), on the door frame, is especially notable.

Tala pairs perfectly with a visit to the Raipur museum to complete your day. The tour will be led by archaeologists who supervised the excavation of this intriguing icon, sharing personal anecdotes from their time excavating the site.

ShIVRInarayan, Chhattisgarh

Situated near the Triveni Sangam (confluence) of the Mahanadi, Shivnath, and Jonk rivers, Shivrinarayan is a major Vaishnav centrE in Chhattisgarh. Here, one finds temples from the 11th-12th century AD, including the Nar-Narayan Temple, Keshav Narayan Temple, and Chandrachud Temple, as well as the more recent Ram-Janaki Temple from the 19th century.

This active religious center is now administered by its 12th headman. Our tour leads will help you understand how regional religious sentiments were established and have endured through the centuries.

Kanker Rock Shelters, Chhattisgarh

Just a 2.5 hour drive from Raipur, plan your cave art exploration day trip with us to experience a time traveling journey tens of thousands of years into the past.

The earliest evidence of the primitive mind's gentle emotions expressed through art can be seen in the cave paintings created by early humans. Following the discovery of such paintings in Altamira, Northern Spain, in the 1870s, similar artwork was found in India's Kaimur range in 1880 and at Singhanpur near Raigarh in Chhattisgarh in 1910. More recently, the Bhimbetka rock shelters in Madhya Pradesh were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Over the years, more information has come to light about the Charama-Kanker group of rock shelters in Chhattisgarh. Created with natural minerals and plant-based pigments in red ochre, white, and black, these ancient paintings depict animals, hunting scenes, geometric patterns, and groups of people. The art evolved over time to include depictions of agricultural practices and the domestication of animals.

Ancient Trade Routes

Sirpur, Chhattisgarh

Often called the "Taj Mahal of bricks," scholars regard the temple as one of the best preserved examples of ancient brick architecture in the country.

Sirpur, whose ancient name was Shripur, is over fifteen hundred years old. Once the capital of Dakshin Kosala, or present-day Chhattisgarh, it is home to the famous Laxman Temple, built by Queen Vasata in memory of her husband, Harshagupta.

The site also offers insights into ancient kingdoms, including the reign of the Som-Panduvanshi king Mahashivagupta Balarjun, a period considered the golden age of Chhattisgarh. One of the first ten museums in the country, this iconic institution is set to complete 150 years. It houses some of central India’s finest ancient bronze sculptures, a vast collection of coins, and rare artefacts, including 2000-year-old wooden inscriptions.

With a collection exceeding 15,000 objects, the museum boasts treasures from the Copper Hoard Culture, relics from the excavations at Sirpur, coins ranging from 2,500 years ago to the Mughal and Sultanate periods, copper plates, and inscriptions. The Tribal and Natural History Galleries further make it a centre of attraction for visitors of all interests.
